Sunscreen Is the Treatment That Makes the Others Last

If I could put one thing in every client's routine and take everything else away, it would not be a laser or a serum. It would be sunscreen. I know how that sounds coming from someone who runs machines for a living. But I have watched too many good results quietly undone by unprotected sun to pretend otherwise.

Why every treatment depends on it

Think about what most treatments are for. Brown spots, uneven tone, dullness, texture from years of light. Now think about what causes almost all of that. Sun. When you clear a sun spot and then keep collecting sun, you are treating and re-injuring the same skin on a loop. When you resurface and then skip protection, the fresh skin you just paid for pigments unevenly and ages faster than it should. Sunscreen is not a nice add-on to a treatment plan. It is the thing that decides whether the plan holds.

This is even more true right after a treatment, when skin is vulnerable and prone to color unevenly. But it is true forever after too. The result you loved at your follow-up appointment lasts in direct proportion to how well you keep the sun off it.

You can pay to clear the damage, or you can prevent it daily. The daily habit is cheaper and it wins.

Living in LA changes the math

Here is what I tell people who moved here from cloudier places. Los Angeles sun is not seasonal in the way you are used to. It is a year-round, most-days fact. And the exposure that ages skin is not only the beach day you remember. It is the commute with the sun through the window, the walk to lunch, the errands, the patio coffee. That incidental light adds up to far more lifetime exposure than the occasional deliberate day out. So protection here cannot be a summer thing or a beach thing. It has to be a Tuesday thing.

How to actually use it

Most people who think sunscreen does not work for them are using too little, too rarely. The fixes are simple.

Mineral or chemical? For most people either works if worn correctly and reapplied. On very sensitive or freshly treated skin, a mineral formula with zinc tends to be the gentler, more forgiving choice. The category matters far less than the habit of putting it on.

Protection is more than a bottle

Sunscreen is the base, not the whole roof. A wide hat does more than any bottle when you are outside for a while. Sunglasses protect the delicate skin around the eyes where so much crinkling and pigment shows up first. Seeking shade at the strongest part of the day, roughly late morning through mid-afternoon, cuts your exposure more than any product. Stack these together and you have a real defense rather than a single fragile line.

The quiet truth of the whole business

I make my living treating skin, and I will always be honest that treatments are worth it for the right person and the right concern. But the treatments are the expensive, occasional part. Sunscreen is the cheap, daily part that makes all of it last. If you take one thing from anything I write, take this. Protect your skin every day, and every other thing you do for it works better and lasts longer. Skip it, and you are bailing water out of a boat you keep poking holes in.
